Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA) is the national association that leads and represents the interests of the 35,000 restaurants and catering businesses across Australia. In addition to actively pursuing national issues and projects of relevance to its members (such as workplace relations), R&CA is committed to ensuring that the industry is recognised as one of excellence, professionalism, profitability and sustainability within its broader social and economic contribution.  This includes promoting and advocating the value of the restaurant experience to the public.

In order to achieve these goals, R&CA proactively campaigns and lobbies all levels of Government to ensure that the views of our members are heard in the public domain.

NSW Wine List of the Year Awards Winners Announced

New South Wales’ restaurants that have excelled in the provision of wine service and list development have been recognised, as part of the New South Wales Wine List Awards.

For the first time Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA) has partnered with the NSW Wine Industry Association to deliver the New South Wales Wine List Awards, which were created in 1996.

The winning restaurateurs, which were announced in Sydney, include:

•    Best METROPOLITAN Wine List Featuring NSW Wines – Wine Odyssey Australia, The Rocks
•    Best REGIONAL Wine List Featuring NSW Wines – Reserve Wine Bar, Newcastle
•    Fine Dining Restaurant Wine List - Comprehensive - Eschalot, Berrima
•    Informal Dining Restaurant Wine List – Comprehensive - Wine Odyssey Australia, The Rocks
•    Informal Dining Restaurant Wine List – Limited  –Cammeray Craft, Cammeray

National Awards for Excellence Puts Victoria on Your Table

The best restaurateurs, caterers and cafe operators in the country were announced at the night of nights in Melbourne yesterday evening.

The Savour AustraliaTM Restaurant & Catering HOSTPLUS Awards for Excellence came to a pinnacle at the Peninsula Docklands from 6:30pm.

Guests mingled over drinks and canapés, before the ceremony kicked off about 7pm.

The major awards were picked up by the below:
  • Customs House in Brisbane won the Caterer of the Year;
  • Quay at The Rocks took out the Restaurant of the Year;
  • Adelaide Oval was honored with the George Mure Memorial Professional Development Award;
  • Compass Group in Sydney Town Hall was awarded with the Green Table Award for Excellence in Environmental Sustainability;
  • Ricardo’s Cafe in Macquarie won the Innovative Workplace Training Award.

United Voice Restaurant Award Penalty Rates Appeal Rejected

Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA), the peak national organisation representing the interests of Australia’s 35,000 restaurateurs, caterers and cafe operators, is pleased the Federal Court has rejected the United Voice’s appeal under the Restaurant Industry Award.

Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA) CEO John Hart says the decision will provide labour cost relief with more hospitality businesses able to remain open or re-open on a Sunday.

“This is a win for operators, staff and consumers with restaurants and cafes now inclined to open their doors on a Sunday,” Mr Hart said.

Digital Business Kit: 5 EPISODES NOW AVAILABLE

Awards for Excellence Wraps Up Local Roadshow in Sydney

The Savour AustraliaTM Restaurant & Catering HOSTPLUS Awards for Excellence visited Pyrmont in
Sydney on Monday 22 September to announce the best local restaurateurs, caterers and café operators
in the Sydney and surrounding regions.

Guests mingled over drinks and canapes at Doltone House in Darling Island Wharf, before the ceremony
kicked off about 7pm.

The major awards were picked up by:
  • Garfish in Manly won the Consumer Vote Award;
  • Commonwealth Bank of Australia in Sydney took home the Caterer of the Year;
  • Quay in The Rocks was named Restaurant of the Year;
  • Peter McCloskey won the Hall of Fame – Individual;
  • Our Big Kitchen was named Hall of Fame – Community Service;
  • Sam Christie was crowned Restaurateur of the Year;
  • Greg Doyle took out the Lifetime Achiever.

Wages Top Expense in Restaurant Industry


Wages and staff on-costs including payroll tax and training have reached unsustainable level that account for 45.3 percent of business expenses, according to Restaurant & Catering Australia’s (R&CA) 2014 Industry Benchmarking Report. The report, which was released today, monitors key trends in business costs, profitability, and labour and skills shortages.

R&CA CEO John Hart says the report is a stark reminder of how tough is it to do business in the tourism and hospitality industry.

Restaurant industry invites the world to dinner

Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA), the peak national organisation representing the interests of restaurateurs, caterers and cafe owners, is celebrating the launch of the next evolution of the ‘There’s nothing like Australia’ campaign.

As a result of the association advocating on behalf of its members for a fresh focus on Australian tourism, Tourism Australia has ramped up the promotion of Australia's food and wine experiences in a new approach to its international marketing.

Launched at Sydney’s award-winning Quay Restaurant, R&CA CEO John Hart is excited the new $10 million campaign is based on the idea of Australia being the world’s greatest restaurant, 'Restaurant Australia'.
